Reality strikes and Reality Bites

She is a child, like any other
The center of the universe, to her mother.
She plays in the mud, sketches on the walls
And runs into her arms, when mamma calls.
She plays with her dolls all through the day
'Oh! what a happy child!!', everyone would say.

She's on top of the world, when in the arms of her father
Feeling that she could touch the stars, as he lifts her up into the sky.
To her, he is the Hero, the one who removes all her bothers
Starry eyed, she looks at the man who could never watch her cry.

She listens to all the stories, eyes wide with rapture
Giggles at Humpty Dumpty, and sighs for Cindrella
Pocketing every little twinkling star that she manages to capture
And dreams about it at night
When her mind breathes life into every fairy picture.

She grows older, but things remain the same
To her parents, she's still a child
But now, more than 'Darling', they use her name.

The stories are different now, more about life and career
But now it's time for her to fly
And so they let go, much as they would have liked to keep her near.

She is a capable, smart individual, dealing with life, her own way
To her parents who can never worry enough, except when now
'Oh! what a talented young lady!!', is what people say.

But every coin has two sides
Somewhere, alone, another girl cries
Unable to escape her grief, no matter where she hides
So she waits in silence until her well of tears dries.

She was a child, like no other
One whose mother had other things to bother
She learnt to cook and clean, but didn't know hide and seek
To protest against marriage at the age of 12, she was way too meek.

Her father, she never really knew
Because every time he came home drunk, he was someone new
And the occasions when he didn't, were only too few.

There were no bedtime stories, only quarrels and fights
And whenever she thought that things couldn't get worse
The condition deteriorated and things got terse
With violence and obscenities scaling new heights.

Now education is beyond her scope of imagination
She has learnt enough, without ever being taught
Building up her life with all that she's got
Giving up the last of her will and determination.

Stories like her's, have been told often, but seldom heard
She needs neither sympathy nor compassion
Her wounds are deeper than a cut or an abrasion
And yet She bears it bravely, without uttering a single word.

She may indicate one, but in essence means more
She has had enough and shouldn't be made to pay
For it was her eyes that crying into the night, went sore
'She' should be a symbol for equality and not just gender
What do you guys say????
